We're Hiring: Interim Executive Director 

Reports to: Board of Directors

Supervises: Campaigns Director, Operations Director, Manager of Digital

Schedule: 3-5 days a week, requiring flexible daytime hours between EST-PST

Status: Temporary Employee or Contract (parental leave coverage), December 2021-January 2023

Location: Remote in Canada

OpenMedia is looking for an experienced non-profit leader to fill the role of Interim Executive Director. We are looking for a grounded, compassionate, dynamic leader, who is committed to supporting our efforts to ensure the Internet is open, affordable, and surveillance-free, in Canada and beyond.

OpenMedia is an effective, dynamic team leading the charge to protect the possibilities of the open Internet. We believe in the power of the Internet to make the world better. To do that, Internet access must be affordable and fast, personal privacy must be the default, and free expression must be respected. 

The past year and half has been challenging for everyone. But we’ve been incredibly fortunate at OpenMedia to have a caring, dedicated, and thoughtful team and community that have banded together to not just weather the storm, but set us up incredibly well for the years ahead. We are just completing our 5-year strategic planning process, and are excited to be moving forward with a clear direction for 2022. 

About the Role

The Interim Executive Director’s primary responsibility will be to lead this dynamic and fast-paced organization through the first year of operationalizing its new five-year strategic plan. They should be eager to take on the work of stewarding a powerful public advocacy organization and ensure the organization’s sustainability and relevance for years to come. They will oversee the day-to-day operations of OpenMedia, leading our staff team. 

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • OpenMedia is in the process of completing the development of its five-year Strategic Plan. The Interim Executive Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of the first year’s Operational Plan, with the support of the Operations Director and Board. 
  • Lead the development of key annual performance indicators and metrics to track progress towards the annual operating plan, and longer-term strategic plan. 
  • Report on progress and impact to OpenMedia stakeholders and Board of Directors

Operations and Governance

  • ​​Ensure operations are compliant with organization’s bylaws and policies, including running the AGM
  • Work with the Operations Director to assist the Board of Directors, including providing monthly financial reports, and overseeing the audit
  • Ensure a productive, safe, and healthy work environment, free from harassment
  • Support the governance committee with Board development and recruitment

Financial Management

  • Accountable for the development and managing the organization’s annual operating budget, with the support of the Operations Director
  • Ensure financial procedures and policies are followed in accordance with the directives of the Board and all other legal/regulatory requirements


  • Support the Operations and Fundraising team in continuing to develop diverse, sustained sources of funding
  • Steward donors and key stakeholders as a key contact point with the organization

Management and Team Culture

  • Lead and inspire the staff team in their daily work
  • Support an organizational culture of trust, respect, and compassion 
  • Work with external consultants to develop and support the organization’s work towards Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

You MUST have experience:

  1. Leading a non-profit organization, such as an Executive Director or Managing Director role. We are also open to consultants and professional Interim Executive Directors
  2. With Canadian non-profit governance 
  3. Building and overseeing annual budgets
  4. Implementing strategic and operational plans
  5. Fundraising in a non-profit environment
  6. In a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines, that involves working with multiple stakeholders
  7. Overseeing, implementing, and/or supporting organizational Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives
  8. With a proven track record in leadership, communications and motivation in a socially progressive environment

The following skills and experiences are NOT required or expected to fulfill the role, but would be a big benefit if you do happen to have them. Please don’t hesitate to mention them if they apply:

  • Experience with grassroots movements, and/or digital organizing
  • Experience with any kind of political advocacy, of working with the federal government
  • Project Management training
  • Familiarity with issues related to Internet policy, in particular in Canada and the U.S.
  • Fluency in French

Compensation & Benefits

This is a 12-14 month position, ideally from December 2021 – January 2023. The role is currently envisioned as a 3-day per week position, focused on overseeing our governance and high-level strategy. However, this could be up to a full-time position for the right candidate, and is open for discussion throughout the hiring process. 

Salary is commensurate with experience in the range of $85-$95k/year for full time. This amount will be prorated to the number of days per week being worked, depending on the final contract.

OpenMedia offers a comprehensive, competitive, extended health benefits package. All full time staff receive three weeks vacation, 12 sick days, and three personal days annually. Additionally, OpenMedia provides a paid office closure for approximately five days each December. We also offer flexible and remote working for all staff, with operating hours between EST - PST time zones.
